The public company, which reports to the State Secretariat for Tourism, gave the Murcia City Council's bid 94.9 points out of 100, according to the provisional resolution of the PID.
Murcia showcased its digital tourism transformation project at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR). The Councilor for Urban Development and Smart Cities, José Guillén, participated in a roundtable discussion organized within the framework of the international fair in Madrid, where he analyzed the integrated technological solutions being implemented to make Murcia a benchmark for innovation, sustainability, and smart management.
The event, moderated by Enrique Martínez, president of SEGITTUR, also included the participation of José Javier Ruiz Arana, Mayor of Rota; José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, Executive Minister of Tourism, Consell de Mallorca; and Javier Fernández Rodríguez, General Director of Digital Strategy and Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias.
Thus, one of the project's core pillars is the MiMurcia smart city platform, which integrates with the central node of the PID (Smart Destination Platform) to manage data in an advanced manner using artificial intelligence, analytics, and centralized governance tools.
The project includes the creation of immersive experiences with holograms in tourist offices, interactive lighting, and multisensory gastronomic experiences. It also applies NAVILENS technology, which is already available in the municipality's squares and streets, to improve the tourist experience for visitors with different abilities and offer accessible information for people with visual impairments, reinforcing Murcia City Council's commitment to accessibility at tourist attractions.
During his speech, Guillén also highlighted the optimization of municipal services through the implementation of sensors for managing public lighting, urban solid waste, urban cleaning, irrigation in green areas, and real-time water analysis, all integrated into the MiMurcia platform. This will include camera-based traffic counting to measure traffic in real time, smart signage, and tools to calculate the tourism carbon footprint with the aim of improving mobility management and the destination's sustainability.
Thus, the project seeks to integrate technological innovation into all levels of tourism and municipal management in Murcia, maximizing the positive impact on residents, tourists, and local businesses, consolidating the city as an advanced and competitive destination.
MiMurcia will be the basis for the intelligent platform, which will maximize operational and economic efficiency, thanks to the homogenization of data and processes.
"We are very satisfied with SEGITTUR's assessment of the project submitted by Murcia City Council, which obtained 94.9 points out of a maximum of 100, allowing us to be one of the 29 candidates selected from among the 305 submitted in Line 2 of city projects," reflected the Councilor for Urban Development and Smart Cities.
The technical report submitted by the Murcia City Council was the highest-rated in Spain in its category this year.
Close collaborations with other Spanish cities
The project also encourages collaboration and module reuse by sharing functionality with other cities, thus promoting interoperability and the use of common standards. Specifically, it will work with Madrid, Valencia, Rivas Vaciamadrid, Santander, Almería, and Alcantarilla, as well as the ITREM (Spanish Institute of Information and Communications).
In this sense, all participants already share the same smart city platform based on FIWARE, which will facilitate interoperability and the cost- and time-efficient implementation of additional modules. Among the modules shared by Murcia with these cities are waste management, the tourism carbon footprint calculator, and lighting regulation sensors, among others. This connection between municipalities will allow the consolidation of a public digital infrastructure that facilitates interoperability, operational efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness, with the aim of improving the tourist experience and offering quality public services to citizens.
